Winter 2020

A letter from the President..

It has been a great start to 2020!  We are excited as we quickly approach our upcoming Annual Session to be held in Sioux Falls this year. Our continuing education speakers come to us with great knowledge as well as intriguing topics. They are sure to peak your interest! Vice President, Katie Williams, RDH, has been working diligently on the schedule, with the help of the rest of our team. We invite you all to join us for our Business Meeting this year which will be held on May 14th, 2020. This year we plan to have it in the evening following the last speaker of the day! Light appetizers and drink will provided during a social hour. We want to formally recognize all new members as we truly appreciate your dedication to our association. Your membership benefits our career field at both state and national levels. Looking forwarding to seeing and conversing with you all at Annual Session!

Sincerely,

Tia Meyer, RDH, SDDHA President

Lobby Day 2020

On January 27, President Tia Meyer, President Elect Carissa Regnerus, Legislative Chair Tasha Wendel, Treasurer Abby Schiley, and Historian Maddy Hanson attended Lobby Day in Pierre. SDDHA provided sandwiches, coffee, and cookies on the House and Senate side. We were fortunate enough to also provide goody bags with toothbrushes and other donated dental supplies because of the generosity of the University of South Dakota Dental Hygiene program. This year, we did not have any bills in session, but were able to talk with many legislators and lobbyists who are working on bills that relate to dental hygiene. Carrie Sanderson from the Center for Child Maltreatment is a registered lobbyist who brought forth a bill that included adding dental hygienists and clergy to the list of mandatory reporters. We were supportive of this bill. Unfortunately the bill didn’t pass as legislators were hung up on the confidentiality issue with clergy. Lobby Day is a great opportunity to keep dental hygiene on legislators minds for potential upcoming bills. We are scheduled to attend again next year during legislative session in January 2021. If you have any questions about Lobby Day 2020 or the upcoming Lobby Day 2021, please reach out to our Legislative Chair Tasha Wendel at [email protected]

Laser Technology Continuing Education Event in Rapid City

On March 7th, 2020 SDDHA held a laser technology continuing education course in Rapid City. The course covered different types of lasers, when to use specific lasers, and how to use the lasers. The course was both instructive and hands on. We had a great turnout and are excited to have more continuing education courses on the western side of the state. We would like to thank Joy Raskie, RDH for teaching the very engaging and informative course. Thank you to our sponsors Dentsply and Patterson! If you have ideas for continuing education courses on the western side of the state, please contact our Western CE Coordinator Krystra Novak at [email protected]

SDDHA and COVID-19

The SDDHA board has been in close communications with regard to updates pertaining to COVID-19. The current subject matter at hand is a public concern that affects patients, teams, families and our dental community. We are standing in solidarity with the CDC's and ADHA efforts to "flatten the curve". Our goal is to be proactive with regard to a solution and not initiate any efforts that may cause more of a problem.

Our board is aligned and supports the message that was communicated by the ADHA. Please visit the following link for the inclusive video from the ADHA. If you would have any questions or concerns for them directly, please email [email protected].

SDDHA April Radiology Continuing Education Event Postponed

With the recent updates from the CDC regarding discouragement of events having 50 or more attendees, we have made the decision to postpone our upcoming radiology CE event (April 9th, 2020). We will be rescheduling this event, however the official date is TBD. Those that are currently registered we would encourage you to keep your enrollment as this will save your spot in line for the rescheduled date. If you do not wish to keep your registered spot, please email [email protected] to have your refund issued. We appreciate your understanding of this sensitive matter. Please know that our decisions are being made with regard to the safety of each and every one of you as well as our scheduled speaker.
