Greetings members of SDDHA,

Thanks for your continued support throughout this last year. As we enter the new year, we are excited to offer some upcoming CEs, continue to monitor legislation, and plan for our Annual Meeting that will be in Rapid City this year.

October is National Dental Hygiene Month

Celebrating National Dental Hygiene Month with you all is a huge honor, we appreciate all of our members and thank you for representing our profession day in and day out! Celebrate yourself and your colleagues next month, we deserve it!

Important dates for your 2021-2022 calendar!

Lobby Day 2022 in Pierre, South Dakota - January 31st

Annual Sessions 2022 in Rapid City, South Dakota - May 12-13th

Continuing Education Courses

It is hard to believe that we are rolling into that time of year again when children are going back to school, the leaves will be changing colors and the temperatures drop.  After careful thought and consideration, the decision has been made to not hold the semi-annual continuing education event in person.  There are multiple factors that played into this decision, but the most obvious being the pandemic and the health and safety of everyone.

However, do not fret there are still opportunities for continuing education and at NO cost to you!  There are two opportunities being held virtually that are timely topics for us in South Dakota.

  1. Mandatory Reporting/PANDA training

September 10th, 2021, from 1:00 PM-3:00 PM

Speakers: Jolynn Bostom, Protective Services Program Specialist for the Division of Child Protection and Cori Jacobson, RDH, MPH from Delta Dental of South Dakota Foundation

1 Clinical CE for the PANDA presentation and 1 pending CE for the mandatory reporting section.

  1. Delta Dental of South Dakota is partnering with South Dakota Medicaid to host Dr. Nathan Suter presenting “Teledentistry and the Digitization of Patient Care”

The session will cover the digital transformation of the patient care journey. Many of these components can be used to facilitate a teledentistry visit or digitize a service that a dental office can provide for patients. Many practices are already using parts of teledentistry or digital dentistry and with new legislation and insurance coverage a practice can maximize the benefits to both the patient and the care team by leveraging technology to deliver care.

The objectives are to:

  • Explain the use and benefits of teledentistry in the context of pre-pandemic, pandemic, and post-pandemic care.

  • Discuss the application and utility of digital technologies, particularly intraoral scanning, artificial intelligence, and more.

  • How implementation of teledentistry can improve access to care and potentially reduce the cost of oral healthcare.

This presentation will be held over zoom on September 23 at 11:00 AM Central. An application has been submitted to the South Dakota Board of Dentistry for continuing education credits.
